At Dalvora Consulting, we know that behind every immigration story is a family waiting to be reunited. Canada’s Family Sponsorship program plays a vital role in helping Canadian citizens and permanent residents bring their loved ones to join them and start a new life together in Canada. Whether you're sponsoring a spouse, partner, child, parent, or eligible relative, we’re here to guide you through the process with expertise, integrity, and compassion.

What Is Family Sponsorship?

Family Sponsorship is a Canadian immigration program that allows citizens and permanent residents to sponsor close family members to become permanent residents of Canada. This initiative strengthens family bonds while supporting the emotional and economic integration of newcomers.

Who Can Be a Sponsor?

To be eligible to sponsor a family member, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident living in Canada, or a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Not be receiving social assistance (except for disability support)
  • Demonstrate financial capacity to support the sponsored person without government help

Who Can You Sponsor?

Eligible relatives you may sponsor include:

  • Spouse, common-law, or conjugal partner
  • Dependent children (biological or adopted)
  • Parents and grandparents
  • Orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren
  • One other relative, if no other eligible family members exist

Types of Sponsorship Streams

Spousal, Common-law, and Conjugal Sponsorship

You can sponsor a spouse or partner through either:

  • Inland Sponsorship: For spouses currently in Canada. May be eligible for an open work permit during processing.
  • Outland Sponsorship: For spouses living outside Canada. Allows for appeal rights in case of refusal.

Note: Sponsors must not have sponsored a previous spouse within the last five years and must meet admissibility criteria.

Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship
  • Requires submission of an Interest to Sponsor form through IRCC
  • Selected through a randomized lottery process
  • Must meet the Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) for the past three years, verified via Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)
Child or Dependent Sponsorship
  • Children must be under 22 years old and unmarried (exceptions apply for dependent conditions)
  • Includes biological, adopted, and stepchildren
  • Children of your spouse or partner may be included
Orphaned Relatives

You may sponsor orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren if:

  • Both parents are deceased
  • They are under 18
  • They are single and not in a common-law or conjugal relationship
Other Relatives

In special cases, you can sponsor one extended relative if:

  • You have no other family members you can sponsor
  • You have no immediate family living in Canada as citizens or permanent residents

Sponsor Responsibilities

By sponsoring, you commit to financially supporting your relative for a specified period to ensure they do not rely on public assistance. This includes:

  • Basic needs such as food, shelter, and clothing
  • Health needs not covered by public health insurance
  • Repayment of any social assistance received by the sponsored person
