Express Entry

Canada continues to be a global destination for skilled professionals seeking new opportunities. Through the Express Entry system, eligible candidates can obtain permanent residence and build a successful future in one of the world’s most welcoming and prosperous countries.

What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online immigration system managed by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). It selects skilled workers based on a points-based ranking system and offers a direct pathway to permanent residence for qualified candidates. Each year, over 110,000 newcomers are admitted through Express Entry, making it Canada’s premier economic immigration stream.

Programs Managed Under Express Entry

There are three core programs under the Express Entry system:

  1. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
For candidates with at least one year of Canadian skilled work experience in the last three years.
  2. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)
For professionals with foreign work experience who meet education, language, and other eligibility criteria.
  3. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FST)
For skilled tradespeople with a valid job offer or a Canadian trade certification.

You may also receive a Provincial Nomination through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)—boosting your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score and increasing your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW) Overview

The FSW Program is ideal for skilled professionals outside Canada. It assesses candidates using a points-based system (minimum 67/100) across the following selection factors:

  • Age
  • Education
  • Work Experience
  • Language Ability (English/French)
  • Adaptability
  • Valid Job Offer (if applicable)

Minimum Requirements

To qualify under FSW, you must:

  • Have at least 1 year of full-time skilled work experience (in the last 10 years) under:
    • TEER 0 – Management jobs
    • TEER 1 – Professional roles (university degree)
    • TEER 2/3 – Skilled trades or college diploma roles
  • Meet CLB Level 7 on an approved English or French test (e.g., IELTS, CELPIP)
  • Provide proof of education, either:
    • A Canadian diploma/certificate, or
    • A foreign credential with an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
  • Show proof of funds, unless:
    • You are legally working in Canada
    • You have a valid job offer from a Canadian employer

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

The PNP enables provinces and territories to nominate individuals who align with their labour and economic needs. A nomination adds 600 points to your Express Entry CRS score.

Participating provinces include:
  • Ontario
  • British Columbia
  • Alberta
  • Saskatchewan
  • Manitoba
  • Nova Scotia
  • New Brunswick
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Northwest Territories
  • Yukon

Each province has unique criteria and application processes. Dalvora Consulting will guide you in choosing and applying to the stream that best fits your profile.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) – Express Entry Immigration

1. What is the minimum CRS score to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)?

CRS scores fluctuate based on the draw. In recent years, scores have ranged from 480 to 520+, though lower scores are sometimes accepted for category-specific or PNP draws. Dalvora Consulting will help you optimize your score to increase your chances.

2. Can I apply without a job offer?

Yes. A job offer is not mandatory for Express Entry. However, a valid job offer can add up to 200 CRS points, significantly improving your chances of receiving an ITA.

3. How long does the Express Entry process take?

The average processing time for a complete PR application after receiving an ITA is around 6 months, but it can vary based on your country of residence and application volume.

4. What is an ECA, and why do I need it?

An Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) evaluates your foreign degree/diploma to ensure it's equivalent to a Canadian credential. It's mandatory for FSW applicants and helps determine your CRS points for education.

5. Do I need proof of funds to apply?

Yes, unless you have a valid Canadian job offer or are already authorized to work in Canada. You must show sufficient funds to support yourself and your dependents.

6. What is the difference between Express Entry and PNP?

Express Entry is a federal system for skilled workers, while PNPs are provincial programs that target applicants with specific skills. You can apply through both, and a PNP nomination will enhance your Express Entry profile.
