If you want to bring your parents or grandparents to Canada, the Super Visa is one of the best options available.

However, many people don’t realize this: Meeting the requirements is not enough, how you prepare your application really matters. With recent updates from IRCC, the process is now more flexible, but also requires careful planning.

What Is the Super Visa?

The Super Visa is a long-term visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

It allows them to:

  • Stay in Canada for up to 5 years per visit
  • Travel in and out of Canada for up to 10 years

It’s a great option for families who want to reunite but are not ready for permanent residence sponsorship.

Latest Update (March 2026)

IRCC recently introduced new changes to make it easier to meet the income requirement.

What’s New?

1. Two-Year Income Option
You can now use income from
either of the last two tax years (not just the most recent one).

This helps people with:

  • Business income
  • Fluctuating earnings
  • Temporary financial changes

2. Combined Income Option
You can now combine:

  • Your income
  • Your co-signer’s income (if applicable)
  • AND your parent or grandparent’s income

This gives more families a chance to qualify.

Who does this apply to?

  • New applications (after March 31, 2026)
  • Applications already in process

Income Requirement (LICO)

To qualify, you must meet a minimum income based on your family size.

This includes:

  • Yourself
  • Your spouse or co-signer
  • Your dependents
  • Your visiting parent(s) or grandparent(s)

(Tip: If your income is close to the limit, strategy matters a lot.)

Host Requirements

You must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be 18 years or older
  • Live in Canada
  • Meet the income requirement
  • Provide a signed invitation letter

Applicant Requirements (Parent/Grandparent)

They must:

  • Apply from outside Canada
  • Pass a medical exam
  • Show they will leave Canada after their stay
  • Provide all required documents

Medical Insurance (Very Important)

This is one of the main reasons applications get refused.

The insurance must:

  • Be valid for at least 1 year
  • Cover health care, hospitalization, and repatriation
  • Be from a Canadian or approved insurer

How IRCC Reviews Your Application

Even if you meet all the requirements, IRCC will still look at:

  • Ties to home country
  • Purpose of visit
  • Financial situation
  • Chances of returning home after the visit

Many applications are refused not because of missing documents, but because the application is not strong enough.
